Chess originated in the 5th century in India, as a game for four players which used dice! Refined by the Arabs into a game of pure skill.

The game had spread into Europe by the 10th century, and taken up by Courtly Society for whom King, Queen, Bishop, Knight and Castle were significant symbols.

Whilst the moves of the pieces quickly became established, size and shape continued to vary enormously until the 19th century, when the famous design of Henry Staunton became accepted as an international standard and this remains the basis for all tournament sets today.
